Why it could be tricky
The pattern S_OOT also fits SHOOT and SNOOT. With S, O, O and T in place, only one spot is left to settle, and each wrong try rules out one word at a time. A guess that tests several of those letters at once can settle it sooner.
What it means
scoot verb · To move or leave quickly, often over a short distance.
Editor's note
A closer look at SCOOT
SCOOT packs two O letters together in positions three and four. It can mean moving quickly or sliding along while seated; a single confirmed O does not settle the other one.
What one guess would tell you
MOIST against SCOOT would produce the colors shown above. Green means the correct letter and spot; yellow means a letter elsewhere in the word; gray means no unused copy of that letter remains. This is a calculated example, not a recorded player's guess.

Three habits that save guesses
-
Move your yellows
A yellow letter is in the word, just not in that spot. Try it somewhere new on your next guess.
-
Trust your grays, mostly
A gray letter isn't in the word. The exception is a repeat: if one copy is colored and the other is gray, the word has exactly one.
-
Greens can wait
In normal mode you don't have to reuse green letters right away. If several words still fit, five fresh letters can rule out more of them.
